Today is the one month anniversary of the day you left us.

It seems like only yesterday I saw you. It's strangely fitting that one of the last moments we spent together involved music. You had a wonderful voice and such an energy about you. Like a living song.

I think about you every day. I think about the people you've touched every day. The happiness you gave them, and their anguish when you left so suddenly. Perhaps it wouldn't have hurt so much if you weren't so special. As though the only sunflower in a field of grass was suddenly ripped from its roots.

I woke up last week truly happy for the first time since you went away. Four weeks to the day; it was only fitting. Life (and death) works in fours. They say when a person passes, their soul stays on earth for four days. The ones left behind spend those four days grieving so strongly it feels like the world is ending.

Perhaps that four weeks was another grieving period, and now it is time to start living again. Never forgetting you; just using your memory to bring joy rather than sorrow. Focusing on the fact that we were lucky enough to experience your light, not the darkness its absence has left behind.

Christians believe today is one of resurrection and re-birth--their savior like a phoenix rising from its ashes. I'm not a Christian, but I believe in an everlasting soul. One day, we'll all be reunited. Until that time, we'll use your memory to lift us up. To help us rise from the ashes, stronger than ever.
